Yup, we are out in the ether. To answer your question. There is a
strong desire to provide the type of access to PPD data that you are
referring to. The Presto project
(http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/presto/) is automating printer
device discovery and queue configuration. It provides an even more
simplified "add printer" dialog, but hopefully will provide a means to
access more printer specific PPD data as it evolves. Personally, the
system-config-printer work that's in Fedora and Ubuntu is more in line
with where I would like to see it go. I like the fact that it simply
creates the queue for you and then offers an opportunity to make
modifications when it notifies you of the queue creation. I don't like
the way it organizes "available" printers when you try to add one by hand.
If you have any opinions on this or any other printing related matter on
Solaris, we are definitely listening and open to questions, comments and
participation. You don't have to limit yourself to the current bundled
components.
