As long as the print server is offering rfc1179 service for the named 
queues, it shouldn't matter what it's running (more or less, 
non-bsd-ish/non-svr4-ish query output would be a problem).  The fact 
that you aren't getting any messages after disabling lpsched is 
disturbing.  lpstat -p should do the following:
       1) get list of configured print queues printers(4)/printers.conf(4)
       2) walk the list contacting print services for status on each queue.
in your configuration, this would mean using lpd-port to connect to the 
print server and syslog messages for it.
Since we are not seeing any, I have to wonder if the list is being 
retrieved from printers/printers.conf.  I don't
suppose that you could send apptrace output from lpstat -p.

what does lpstat -v report for you?
