Yes, it can be added to the docs. I will let our tech writer know (if
she isn't reading this already).
We are working on making significant improvements to the printing
related parts of the Answerbook.
Our writer is starting to put together bits at
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/printing/Documentation/Guide/
I am certain that any and all comments or suggestions will be happily taken.

As for making it easier to use, that is a work in progress. There is
work going on to improve access to printer capabilities data (PPD files
for now) and better integrate it with a hopefully shrinking set of
printing dialogs in use by GUI applications. Gnome 2.16 integrated in
Nevada build 53 along with a new GTK+, which includes a common printing
dialog for applications to use. Nevada buil 54 will include basic
support for this dialog to use a standard printing API to interact with
the print service. From there, we expect to improve the data accessible
to the printing dialog so that it can provide a more accurate
representation of the capabilities available from the printer or print
service.

On the management side of things, we are working toward automatic
printer/queue discovery and automatic queue creation
see http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/printing/projects/Presto/
for more information. The goal is that you simply plug the printer in
and it becomes available for printing and/or you plug the system into
the network and the network printers/queues become available for your use.
