Our
disposal vendor delivers locked, empty, opaque, plastic bins to the
facility. House keeping staff places
the bins on the units, in the offices etc. Bi-weekly the vendor sends their truck for pick-up. Bins are delivered to the loading dock
by our staff. Bins are unlocked and
contents are dumped into the truck via a mechanical system. The shredder is part of this system. All documents are shredded (to a chaff)
on site. The vendor’s employee
never sees the bins contents. The
chaff is transported to the vendors warehouse for recycling. Donald L. Ribelin HIPAA Project Manager Firsthealth of the Carolinas (910) 215-2668 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -----Original

believe pick up is inappropriate - recall scandal of 3 yrs ago when the dump
truck got in an auto accident and claims flew all over the highway. We
require an on-site, cross cut (little diamonds rather than long strips that can
be put back together) shredding service. "Noel, Linda A." wrote: -----Original

I am curious
as to how others are handling the destruction of Paper claims and associated
records under both HIPAA and their individual states laws. I am aware of the
rules for retention, I am more interested in disposal of paper records no
longer needed and the best way to handle them. Dale W.
