For those of us who sometimes need to audition midi files in the gm format, you want the convenience of a high quality gm bank without having to launch an ap to get at a plugin. Wouldn't it be nice to get that flexibility right in quicktime? Well, I found a way to do it. Here's a cool way to replace the current sound set with a better one. Core audio uses sound fonts, which have a .sf2 extention. There are lots of free sites that offer downloadable sound fonts. Also,Sonic implants has a 250 mb sound font for 99 bucks that isn't bad. If you find one you like, place it in the library/audio/sounds/banks folder. Then,go into system preferences and launch theQuick Time preference. In the advanced tab, set the synthesizer to the gm bank you just put in the banks folder. Soon, I will place a link to a free one that is absolutely amazing. I need to find a place to host it because the archive that it is in is a .exe file, which only works on a PC. If anyone has any ideas, hit me up. Kevin Reeves www.kevinreeves.net
