Richard here is he answer to your problem, and a very "chip" solution indeed http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_Specials.cfm?ID=2424&Item=OWC5MD128MBE Buy and install in pairs ( of equal capacity on this sort of machines), for best performance. You will find that as long as you reach some 800 -900 Mb of RAM, then you don't need to use Virtual memory anymore. Load the thing to 1Gb and see that old machine working like you can't imagine. The other issue with the HD taking soo long, along with the black screen suggest many probabilities: first, you have to look for some hardware/software isssue with the Video card. Check for drivers updates first, and if nothing happens, unplug the card and plug it in again. Also check with the Profiler iof the RAM chips are all equal and well installed( not pairing one of 64Mb with other of 128Mb). WIth 350Mb installed, either there is a problem with some of the RAM chips( and the computer runs RAM tests all the time at startup unless you tell it otherwise). A machine like the 9600 should not take even a minute to be working. Typical start up times is 40-50 seconds. FInal option is that you have a defective HArd drive, and full initialization would be advised prior to buying another one.At the current prices you can get a 36 Gb disk for almost nothing. http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_Specials.cfm?ID=5048&Item=OWC07N6286N THis ,of course, among many options, just an example of good prices to power up old machines before it's too late.
