sometimes that happens, often an RGB file wil include colour swhich are
<out of gamut> for the destination device. if you could have known
their CMYK specification you could have anticipated the problems inside
photoshop and thus optimised the file for the output medium. With the
right information it's not difficult.

Not quite true.
Irrespective of format, all inkjets [without RIP's] work on RGB
ideally, just about any inkjet with a RIP can act as a CMYK printer.
Notwithstanding that, the inkjet may have a larger gamut so you'd still
need to use the destination colour space in your workflow to <fix> the
files so that unprintable colours are not reproduced and therfore
expected to print in the final media.
Best to get the disappointment over upfront.
Colour Management allows that. There is little point providing an image
[onscreen or inkjet printed] for approval by a client if it is
impossible to reproduce in the intended media. Although some
photographers like to crank up the colour when working on files, it's
best to keep an eye onthe intended destination capabilities, giving a
client unrealistic expectation is not a good way to get more work.
