David

I've looked at your comments and I have to agree my mail to Giles seems
a bit <<tub thumping>>. When you're read the rest of this mail I hope
you'll appreciate, though, that it's the concept of profiling <tub> I'm
thumping rather than trying to sell myself.

Am I right in thinking you joined the list back in December 2002? Just
getting my perspective right.

Isn't that useful? for him to know that our profiles [specifically]
have helped other users get to grips with their printers??

Especially since we made the profile he was having trouble with, hence
my reference to those for whom profiles do work.

So far it seems that only Thomas and I have been willing to try help
Giles appreciate what he needs to do. At the outset it's tough to know
what is needed and why. I went through all this myself, it can be a
nightmare..

I'd also ask you also to appreciate that profiles are not all the same,
unfortunately some are , for whatever reason, inaccurate, if he does
ahead it'd be nice for him to not waste his money. Disappointment with
profiles rubs off on others and when that happens it's a shame as the
concept of colourmanagement is devalued.

I've went into a company once where they'd paid 750 pounds 3 times to
get a machine set up right. It was still way off. As the owner said
<how many times do I have to pay 750 pounds to get this machine
profiled before it's right?>. He had almost given up. Now he's a
convert (we charged him 150.00).

We also offer an instrumented verification of the profiled printer, as
part of the service. The technology to print special patches - post
profile- and then evaluate performance is something only we offer
AFAIK.

Since you've only recently joined I guess you'll not be aware that, for
a few years, Thomas at pixl Aps. and I have given a lot of time to the
Prodig list, mostly to help the users get used to colourmanagement
concepts. After doing this a while, and being asked to help listmembers
out personally, I decided to make a business of it. It seems practical
for me to spend about 40 hours a week on research and for others to
have access to this information - it avoids duplication of the research
and allows photographers to get on with photography.

Both Thomas and I believe that a wider acceptance of good quaity
profiled workflows will make every photographer's life much easier.
Designers and clients too.

Perhaps that's one reason why we were commissioned by the AOP DIG
committeee to work as technology advisers and service providers for the
upcoming Pro-File scheme. And why I'm already speaking at Nescot, AOP,
BIPP and CoWC this Spring.

I'm pushing the concept of accurate profiling, indirectly that pushes
my services, I'm sorry if it appears blatant, but at least I'm
completely open about it. I admit that I am happy and willing to do the
work.

We've had a lot of thanks for the list time we put in and the wider
acceptance of colour management makes it feel very worthwhile. We are
both evangelical about colormanagement [and the associated gains for
image integrity] and will encourage users at every opportunity.

>From the mail I've received it seems we're both probably welcome
contributors to the list? perhaps you don't agree?

It works like this - we have a remote profiling service [Thomas does
the remote profiles], I also make profiles here for my own clients. I
handle payment for Thomas. Most people know this.

We've had some amazing feedback.

These articles [and the others, and the printertesting manual offered
there] were written to prevent needing to rewrite the information
repeatedly in answer to the same questions popping up preiodically [and
it took a while]. Most people apparently find my website informative
and not at all heavy sell.

Of course, I have to make a living from this work. And I have a lot of
happy prodig listee clients.

etc.

OK, so that's a signature telling anyone who wants to know a little
about me. I think it's been the pretty much the same for almost 2 years.

difficult to say I can help without saying <I can help>??

OT?
I haven't had any notes from the listmom about OT posts?
If others are appreciative of my work then I'm really pleased to know that.

I try not to be pushy, but perhaps my enthusiasm runs away with me
occasionally? Point taken, I'll try be more careful.

there were no email addresses in my post as it appeared on the list.

to what are you referring?
