Hi Dick,

I'm afraid my answer to you is NOT about Epson Eternet print-server cards -
but I can warn you off a loosely similar beast - the Netgear range of
Ethernet Print Servers... e.g. Model PS113 (one Ethernet port, three
parallel ports). Touted as a High Performance print server, they neglect to
mention that it has a miserly 64kB (or something in that region) buffer.

In translation; even small graphics print jobs took roughly five to ten
times longer to print (especially considering Epson print data files are not
unusual at >100MB for an A4 page). And that was running just one of three
possible printers.

I would assume that what really kills the performance is the size of that
buffer - it is probably less than a colour graphic requires for a single
pass of an Epson inkjet printhead! One would assume that the Epson print
server cards can hold a fair bit more than that.

I doubt it is our final implementation, but we currently run something like
8-10 printers off a 3 computer network, each connected through a variety of
USB and parallel, and find Windows 2000 printer sharing relatively easy and
straightforward... and also pretty reliable (though not perfect).

I'll be interested in feedback too from others on the efficiency of the
Epson cards!

Best Regards,
nij
