but is does have a white & black point setting. Curves can be applied in PS,
in 16bit if need be

I think I may be missing a trick here, but I don't see how you can set the
black and white points on the raw file. (using the plugin)

The plugin does not appear to be as sophisticated as using Nikon Capture 3.5
( on a D1x), and the colour is different. I understand that you can set the
points within photoshop in 16 bit, but surely it is better to adjust the
full information of the raw file before it goes into photoshop?

You can set the black point by Option/alt dragging the Shadows slider and set the highlight point by Option/alt dragging the Exposure slider.

For me the most important thing is the speed with which you get a raw image into Photoshop. If you are going to be shooting a large number of pictures it is probably likely that a user will want to establish a batch setting to open many images using the same settings in 16-bit and then make the tonal adjustments later. It is nice having the opportunity to tweak the colour, contrast and saturation in the Camera Raw dialog, but I don't use these controls much as I prefer to make the tonal edits in Photoshop. And as long as the image you have is in 16-bit, that allows a lot of flexibility. However, you can use Camera raw to make radical changes to the incoming data - for example, to correct for an incorrect white balance.
