By all means by yourself a 1ds, I'm sure they're superb. BUT - if you're
buying it simply for the fact that you are not convinced about what
resolution is needed to produce a magazine page, think again!

The Canon D60 and now the 10d are more than capable of producing full bleed
standard magazine pages (approx A4). Do you have to interpolate (as was
Becky's initial question), work it out! Of course you do, otherwise at the
good old 300dpi figure, it wouldn't be big enough, surprise, surprise! Does
this interpolation hurt? Try it for yourself. Then if you can spot the
difference, slap yourself on the back, because you've got far better eyes
than most of us poor saps. Far too much time is spent amongst the "new"
digital photographers, (yes, we were all new once, I remember :-) discussing
things of this nature. In the good old days of the Canon D30, it was
relevant, but even that, could have fooled most people, printed at A4. Hell,
I have an A3 print from mine, which is as sharp as anything I've ever shot
on 645 film. Anyway, nowadays, with a 6MP camera, there is simply no concern
when printing to an average magazine size. Either hand it in as it comes, or
interpolate it up a little (my favourite, would be to use 4x in
PhotoRetouchPro). At the end of the day, the magazine client isn't going to
know any different anyway, the one's that will are the repro house, and half
the time they talk b*******cks. I once had a repro house complaining that
I'd supplied them with 9Mb files (from a D30) and they were too small. They
were being reproduced at about 1/8th of a page and were in fact more than
large enough for the job, and looked fantastic when printed.

For the record, I've shot fashion jobs, sharp ones, full bleed, on a 10d,
reproduced without any problems whatsoever in Wedding & Home magazine (IPC).
They look as sharp or sharper than any film job I've ever shot for them.
Stop worrying so much.

Regards Paul
