Hi John

> I'm considering buying a Canon G5 but have heard that when using wide
angle

You're right, you do but the guide number of the flash isn't very high
so it might not be worth worrying about if you have an external EX head.
You won't have the problem if you're using the hotshoe as the head is
lifed sufficiently above the lens barrel as to not affect it. I've been
using a 420EX head with a G3 and the head actually tilts forward as part
of the design mechanic. Depending on the flash gun and situation, you
could always bounce the flash as another option. Not sure about the wide
angle adaptor but I've been using a Lensmate which slides over the
barrel of the G3 and allows you to mount 49mm filters. I find that even
though it only protrudes slightly beyond the barrel, with a filter on, I
get shadows using the built in flash.

An obvious point but the moment you put a decent head on the G3, the
handling of the camera becomes difficult - the 420EX is heavier than the
G3 and as it leans forward in the hotshoe, the setup always wants to
fall forward - you constantly have to counter balance and its a bit
fiddly, I do have reasonably large hands but I imagine this will be a
problem with any of the larger Canon flash heads.

Interestingly, I see that dpreview.com don't embrace the G5 as they did
the G3 suggesting that Nikon forced their hand in getting a 5mp model
out and there are a few shortcomings as a consequence. The G3 being
'old' technology is now considerably reduced and at 4mp, is still
perfectly adequate for most applications. See on ebay, they appear to be
changing hands for a couple hundred less than the G5.

Hope this helps.

Alex
