Hi

In general, expose so as not to clip the highlights, you can usually get the
shadow detail out with Photoshop.  I've found a lot of detail can be pulled
out without too much noise, but once the highlights clip, you've lost them.

Of course, like all guidelines, there are times you will want to do it
differently :-))

I think that there are still many principles from exposing film, that people
tend to use, forgetting that the characteristics of film and image sensors
are quite different in some respects. Most default settings on cameras tend
to push the contrast and sharpening a bit too much since the manufacturers
know that people will prefer the 'punchier' images to 'dull flat ones' that
need some external processing to get the best out of them.
