I have just returned a brand new Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro lens due to the fact
it produces a orange spot in the center of any shot taken (regardless of
aperture). (this was checked on two 14n bodies)

Unbelievably I've seen the same thing - an orange spot in the centre. I was photographing a CD case with a red label.

This is the result of a reflection from the shiny surface of the CCD itself off of the back lens element. I used to see this all the time with older Kodak DCS cameras with macro lenses at close distances. Mostly new lens coatings and perhaps newer anti-reflection coating for the CCD have eliminated most occurrences. However, its possible that you've found the exact right set of circumstances (lighting, subject, distance and lens) to produce this effect. Change any one of these and you'll have a different result. BTW, I used to see this with a really sharp Nikon Micro Nikkor 55mm!
