In response to all your help - (thanks!) I am having to rent a ColorVision
kit including the Printer profiler/scanner, due to time constraints. However
I had an email in finally from Gretag, and they put the clash issue down to
their own software:

Dear Customer,

this was a known problem we were faced with the previous i1 Match vs. It is
fixed within the latest i1 Match vs. 2.0.3 available at www.i1color.com
which you can download.

Great...I can't get hold of the Gretag until Weds, so I have decided to give
the Pantone system a shot over the weekend which will hopefully deal with my
irate clients' print jobs for the moment, and give me some decent profiles.
