Although Richard intended his reply to you to be off list (not sure why as I think it a very valid answer) I have to say that even though I am a strong advocate for OSX, I think you must tread cautiously. Your mix off hardware is a pretty good recipe for some anguish.

I would suggest that you install another HD and install OSX on that so that you don't have any risk of upsetting your existing system. You say your Mac is three years Old, presumably that's a G4. I first installed OSX on a 300MHz B+W G3 and although it works it really struggled so I pretty quickly had to move to a 933 MHz G4, though I have kept my G3 and have reverted back to OS9.2.2 on that, just to run some legacy hardware (scsi scanners)

But do find a way to get onto OSX - you'll love it, and 10.3 has some great new features.
