Michael
Check the upgrade notes before installing Panther. Also, check the Apple
website for latest known problems. I remember seeing a warning posted on the
site. I think it basically said to disconnect any external firewire hard
drives before starting the installation.
Remember to download MacJanitor from VersionTracker.com and to run it
periodically if you turn off your puter regularly. Alternatively, run the
command lines from the Terminal window. They were posted here recently. Be
wary of installing third party utilities, though. MacJanitor has a good
history now and can be trusted now and it's also free! And to repair
privileges from the Disk Utility.
One other tip, if you choose the option to log in with a password, create a
second account - just in case. Should you get locked out, you can get your
foot in the door, if not your whole body.
