Hi Chris, I've checked and double checked my driver settings thinking it was a probable dpi problem but it was set to 1440 and I was printing on paper stock that I know is OK. Following on from some other advice I will try a reinstallation of the driver and start again from scratch in the hope that it isn't a head malfunction.
