Many of these backs use the flash sync to communicate with the camera and some Holgas have a hot shoe. Could this be the path?

The cropping creates other issues - you'd need an H20 or DCS Pro back - a far bigger chunk of change.

I have thought of attaching one to a scanning back - if you could turn up a MF Powerphase you could get 30MB Holga files, but I'm not handy enough to create something to support the results. (nor have I found an MF PowerPhase or PhotoPhase for sale in this area)

BTW...did any other company make scanning backs for medium format besides PhaseOne?

I believe that a scanning back would be the way to go. The problem os using an adapter on the hot shoe is that the engineering of the Holga is not exactly hi-tech, so the contact is not very reliable. For you to have an idea, I almost burn a flash pack when I connected it to an adapter on the Holgas hot shoe. After this I put an inexpensive Vivitar flash, 285HV or a 3500, to fire the studio flashes.
