For the above method to work, you have to add extra steps. You will have to
link the Adj layers to a "normal" layer, make sure that layer is active and
drag it with the Move tool from the source window to the destination window;
not from the Layers palette, which is what most people try to do.

What you describe is what MOST people expect to happen because, when you
drag a layer from the Layers palette into another file, it's copied for you.
So, you think, AHA!... If I link several layers and drag one to another
file, all the linked layers will be copied to the destination file. It
follows on so logically, you say to yourself, I'd be wasting my time reading
the manual or trying to see if my thinking is correct. It has to be. It's so
logical. Erm....The folks at Adobe do not think like "most" people, it
seems. <g>
