You're right, IMO, that Ultrachrome can be limited in blacks on some papers. It's worth noting that blacks always look (and measure) better with glossy/semigloss papers. Of course once under glass, PhotoRag becomes a <virtual gloss paper> ;-) - and the blacks look a lot nicer. Qualities of Ultrachrome include reduced metamerism [over many dyes], the promised longevity - aswell as the 20 minutes to stability. I suggest you commission Jack Lowe to do a print for you on his 9600 which is set up with Proofmaster. I've never seen better prints on photorag - It's the only way to properly assess the potential black performance. I'd say that the Proofmaster RIP adds clarity aswell as crispness and spped to printer performance, objects seem real enough to lift off the page. IMO it makes Epson driver prints look mushy. >I sent the test image to Neil Barstow who confirmed that it was a very >good profile/rendition actually I wrote: 7600 not bad at all for ultrachrome on matte MIGHT be bettered with the right RIP >but he suggested that a GOOD RIP is the most >likely way to get the absolute optimum out of the printer, paper, ink >combination. On the prints you sent for assessment, as I recall - I was essentially looking at the possibility of improving colour saturation in reds, I'm not able to recall my opinion on the blacks.
