For the Kodak that�s correct but not for the nikon. It would appear that the
nikon raw files benefit greatly from a custom wb in camera. If that's the
case then the files aren't completely raw files.

Nikon RAW is a true RAW file, with the image data in Bayer format from immediately 
after A/D. WB is a software process applied after A/D. If you use Nikon Capture, you 
can do pretty much anything with RAW.
