It is a TIFF format with an embedded thumbnail and detailed info in the
header for camera settings.

In the data section is the RAW camera data which is presumably unprocessed
so the different RAW converters have their best chance to optimize it.

Note this was not entirely true on the original D1 which applied the WB
settings to the raw data.  That is not done on the D1X and the other models.
