what are the implications of fitting it yourself. Apart from losing
your profile, are there checks that need to be carried out afterwards that
only engineers with epson software can carry out?
I kept this message from quite a while back. I'm sure it's ok to re-post it. You can probably find it in the archives, but here it is anyway.
Good luck if you take this route

Be warned this is from memory.
Be really really gentle.
Press the paper feed button 3 secs
remove the inks. You just spent about 40 quid cos they will not work again.
remove the screw that the parked printer head was trying to hide.
Switch off. Remove screw on LHS and 2 at back.
Now you could remove the cover if it wasn't designed to catch the printer
head and the height adjustment knob.
Remove the blue ink cover lids,4 colour first, they have a little leg with a
plastic knob on the end which runs in a groove, tease this out, then unclip
the back.
Drink Tea and sweat. You are passing the point of no return.
Be gentle. the head is made out of plastic and runs in a precision type of
way up and down the printer. Force, snap or bend anything and you are
stuffed, or rather your printer is.
The ribbon wire has to be removed, the plastic cover for it is the full
width of the carraige, about 2cm deep and clips in either side, half off,
you can just reach in underneath it and unplug it. The cover stays around
the ribbon.
Lay the ribbon down along its channel, supporting the end as kinking it will
spoil things.
Now there is an extra interesting small electrical connector. Round the
front LHS of the carraige is a small screw. Unscrew it and drop it. You can
spend a happy couple of hours checking your eyesight later.
Under the plate you have released is a loop of wire which allows enough
slack to remove the second small connector. This wire has been knitted
around the carraige but can be gently released.
Finally on the RHS outside of the carraige is a reasonably large screw
holding a metal bar down. The other end is held in place by a spring.
Remove screw, tease out bar. There should be nothing left holding the
printer head in place, gently lit it out. It tries to catch on everything
but comes out.
Feel extremely smug with yourself.
Place new head in place, put bar back in making sure the spring pushes the
bar which pushes the head into place.
Do the wire knitting macrame thing. Put back covers, realise you are a
moron, remove covers again and fit ribbon wire. Re-re-fit covers.
Re-fit Plastic top cover
Your done.
Savoir the moment as pushing the power button will either produce an intense
feeling of ecstasy or utter desolation, until you realise you forgot to plug
it in.
It took me a morning, but it is one of those jobs where if I ever do it
again will take about half an hour max.
