Do you have "maximize compatibility" checked on? when you save as a PSD file?
David
Hi David,
no, I didn't have it on. Took a while to answer, because I did some experiments. As many times, these showed that things get weirder if you look too close.
This is what happens (1MB = 1000000 Bytes, rounded):
start PS CS (German version 8.0.1) open a 141MB 16 bit TIFF-File generated by Nikon Scan save as Photoshop, don't maximize compatiblity add levels adjustment layer, delete layer mask save as Photoshop (different file), don't max. comp. add layer mask to levels layer save as Photoshop (different file), don't max. comp. copy green channel into layer mask (so that it cannot be compressed) save as Photoshop (different file), don't max. comp.
The resulting file sizes: 141MB (no adjustment layer) 256MB (with adjustment layer, no layer mask) 257MB (with adjustment layer, empty layer mask) 295MB (with adjustment layer, layer mask with content)
Then, I loaded each of these files, converted it to 8 bits, and saved as, again without maxing compatibility:
70MB 71MB (71.488.717 Bytes) 71MB (71.487.287 Bytes - less than without layer mask!!!) 95MB
Then, I again loaded each of these 8 bit files, converted it to 16 bit, and, again, saved as, this time maximizing compatibility:
141MB 196MB 196MB 214MB
Another load-save as cycle, without maxing comp., resulted in almost the same sizes (141-196-196-214). Loading the original TIFF-file, and trying to re-create the larger files from the beginning of the experiment did NOT succeed. The files stayed "small". Only after closing PS, and starting it again, loading a TIFF file (not a PS file!), and saving as PS, there it was again: 141-256-257-295.
In any case, the adjustment layer without layer mask takes up too much file space. Looks like a hell of a bug to me. What do you think?
All the best
Otto
