Error 99 is a catch-all where the camera is telling you "there is something wrong with me, but I'm not sure what". If you ask the technicians at Canon about it they say that the only way they can diagnose the problem is to have the camera in there for testing (and even then these kind of intermittent problems can be hard to pin down).

The first thing you should do with Error 99 is switch off the camera, if necessary remove and replace the battery, and try switching on again.

In my case I often get an Error 99 on my 1Ds when the camera is COLD. After I warm it up to room temperature it operates normally.
