Should we go for a cheap laser? If so what? Or a better bubble jet? Or even where to start researching.

I use a Minolta 2300dl, the second replacement, so I wouldn't suggest one of those, but Epson do one for half nothing, and you can get toner powder from U-Refill Toners Ltd 0121 6932644.
