Handing over RGB files to a printer is (usually) almost as unsatisfactory as handing over a colour negative to them in effect.....not a good work flow if you want the best out of your work, as only you really know what you want your work to print like. Yes, I know that this is being idealist, but we are photographers aren't we!
True. But what can you do when you do not get information about paper/size/
printing condition, and the (minimal) information supplied are from your customer,
and not from the prepress/printhouse. And time is short. Customer wants RGB,
because it is flexible. (I have started to supply a warning memo with RGB-files).
It was much more easy when one could deliver chromes (less work too).
This happened to me: Architect-firm wants house photographed. RGB-files w/prints
supplied. All fine. Then architect get contact with Japanese publisher who wants to make
a book. They generally prefer chromes, but if supplied digital they wanted 350ppi/30x40cm!
(spread-size+bleed). But 350ppi. They might have their reason. But I wonder how well the
sharpening issue is going to be taken care of (When they need to size down).
I have provided 220ppi files for another project. This was CTP printing through (I was told)
20my stochasic screen (equals 70lp cm) which looks very nice indeed.
