Have thrown everthing named Epson away,deleted printers from 
list......
reinstalled....problem still there?!!
do you have a chair leg standing on the USB cable? could be the signal
is getting squeezed down?

seriously:
there is an application called
PrinterSetupRepair
from  http://www.fixamac.net/software/psr/
whilst this is intended mainly for RIP users who need to fix CUPS
issues and clear OSX print caches, it may be able to solve your issues
by really deleting everthing like drivers connected with the printing
process, caches, etc. aswell as fixing permissions.
of course you'll need to reinsaalll drivers (under Epson USB)
afterwards.
