In an ideal world, a forum of the kind at http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php would be great, with posts also available via e-mail. I didn't think this was possible, but Photokit's forum will soon be using this system (here's a post from Bruce Fraser: "You'll still be able to receive posts via email. You'll only have to visit the forum to post messages yourself. My preference would have been to also allow posting via email, but the software we've employed can't do that.") This kind of software would allow users to follow which topics are active via an e-mail 'digest', and only read, or reply to, those which they can help with/are interested in. As with all forums, topics with a lot of traffic stay at the top of the list, while others disappear down the page into oblivion (and the archive).
I'm conscious that Prodig is free and that software costs money, but if people are serious about keeping what is a valuable means to stay in a contact with a large and knowledgeable community of photographers and other experts, perhaps members could make a voluntary one off payment towards getting such software up and running. I'd be happy to. Any other takers?
