I'm currently contemplating a solution you may find interesting.
Miglia produce a Raid1 mirror solution for external firewire or internal IDE drives. The internal version works with XP and has the code HS-Ri.

The downside is the price, approx 280 English pounds without drives. Realistically you will need 3. 2 for the mirror and a spare to recycle daily?
