First of all the type of camera you are using really has no bearing on the card reader.
Secondly, I have a Lexar Firewire reader attached to a G4 desktop, and a SanDisk USB 2.0 card reader attached to my G4 iBook, both running OS X 10.3.5 and frankly, I do not see much difference in download speeds. They are both fast.
This applies to images saved to the cards from a D70, a D1, my old Coolpix 990 and my wife's Canon Ixus!

Also are there any particular brands to avoid because of compatibility and reliability issues when used with Nikon D70?
