I've added back the "important stuff" e.g.
{{{
<metal:page define-macro="master">
<metal:block define-slot="top_slot" />
<metal:block use-macro="here/global_defines/macros/defines" />
}}}
to main_template, and Plone otherwise works fine ;-)
