hey there,

some time ago i was on the search for a newsletter product. the
intentions and features of malthe borch's p4a.plonenewsletter [1]
impressed me. but it was dependent of the p4a stack which wasn't
compatible with plone4 at the time and a bit of an overhead since p4a
best fits plone2.x sites.

so i created a package called collective.newsletter [2] from
p4a.plonenewsletter with the same featureset but without the dependency
on the p4a stack. the package was tested with plone4. it uses malthe
borch's StoneageHTML [3][4], which was updated by me to work with the
recent software stack (cssutils, plone4, ...).

the main features are:
- it uses existing newsletter management systems (mailman, google,
sympa)
- any archetypes based content type can be sent as an newsletter (also
topics and collages, which can be used to collect the content to be
sent)
- it uses an collective_newsletter.css which is used to style the
newsletter, besides other css resources from portal_css. it can be
overloaded by zcml in you own integration product.

missing bits for a first release:
- extensive tests
- encoding problems (especially the subject field is encoded in the
moment as UTF8 which may cause problems)
- codebase move to plone's collective
