Our architect is into solar and wind and we are going to look into it
for our new house. I know we can sell the electricity back to the power
company which would help in the costs.
Yes, someone needs to crunch the numbers to determine how much energy is
used and how much the will be produced from solar and wind.

From what I understand solar is best used for heating hot water (pipes
on the roof kind of thing).  Even in cold climates a few degrees means
your gas/electric heater needs to do less work.

I don't think wind turbines have much practical use on a small scale.
Although I did see something on TV recently where someone was using a
wind turbine to power a small pump that supplied well water to his
house.
