Solar is great, and then it's only great whey you lower your
expectations.  I lived in a solar designed house in Flagstaff AZ in the
early 80s.  I don't think that there has been much of an improvement in
collection capabilities, so here is the list I remember.

1) Hot water was not hot.
2) A warm water clothes wash in the winter could wipe out your hot water
gain for the day.  So either learn to wash in COLD water for all things,
and cold water in the winter is COLD!
3) Have backup capabilities for heating your water tank.  Use a wood
burning stove, or converted fireplace jacket.
4) It gets hot in a solar house in the summer.
5) Be not afraid of plumbing!
