He entered the country illegally was the point being made. There
were several posts here that equated people who enter the country
illegally with criminals and felons, and that these "criminals" are a
drain on the country and must be stopped at all costs. The story of
José Gutierrez might help those inclined to buy into such polemics to
see that it isn't as simple as they'd like the argument to be framed.

You are right that he entered the country illegally and because of our
reluctance to enforce our own laws he was allowed to stay and obtain
permanent residence status and further enter military service. His
early life WAS a drain on the country and maybe he feels that he owed
something in return. Those that enter the country illegally are
criminals and deserve to be treated as such.
