I pretty much had that impression about Windows until now, but thought
that Vista would bring Windows to a new level, i.e. a re-write that
would actually be organized around rhyme and reason.

Having spent plenty of time with my nose in Win32API, I can verify that the current Windows arch. is quite a mess, and clearly shows all the old signs of crazy hacks that it inherited from the 16 bit days.

I too was truly hoping that MS would create Vista from the ground up with a clear, cohesive vision and common practice in the way the API is defined, used, and such..

While I can't say I've spent that much time looking at Vista's API, the impression I've gotten is that it's still a giant mess.

If that's truly the case, it's quite a shame and represents in my mind the biggest mistake MS has made to date.

I personally think Vista will be a mess, and a huge screw up for MS, in many ways (not the least is the ridiculous # of different flavors they plan to offer). For the linux crowd, I think, Vista will go a long way to help Linux take over. I'm sure Vista will "look pretty", as MS is great at delivering a shoddy product with nice eye candy, and will still be wildly popular with the home user, but for business / corporate users, I think it will be a huge flop.
