My mother owned various hole-in-the-wall food joints. I worked for her at exactly one of them. She insisted that I put my tips in a jar behind the counter because she didn't want me to "jingle" while I worked. Then I caught her helping herself to part of my tips. Her explanation was that she was required to pay me a base wage that was too high when my tips were added in so she was equalizing my earnings back to where they "should" be. I quit, of course.
