You could always have a look at CVS.  Not as good as Subversion, but
still pretty darn good and also free.  Wasn't Subversion derived from
CVS or am I completely wrong?

The Subversion server runs under Apache, if I understand the online
stuff correctly. I don't know if I can get our network guy to go for it.
