Andy, no offense intended, but maybe you are suffering the consequences of your 
own accomplishments.  Over the years I have found that really smart people 
latch on to an idea or a methodology and then struggle to twist it into 
something that works.  They will not or cannot admit that they made a mistake 
in their initial assessment of a solution.  Perhaps you are falling into that 
trap and you need to talk to someone about the problem.  

Even if you just explain the whole thing to someone who knows NOTHING, you will 
develop a finer appreciation of what you are trying to do and often develop new 
insight.
