I often use something like this:
http://www.btfworks.gr/productsscreen.php

There is a search text box and below from it there is an hierarchical grid! (pure Visual Foxpro code)
The results are devided in categories

If you are interested on this let me know.

Other times I use a search form with various criterias and a simple grid for displaying the results.

I did something like this but not stock. I used a list and a soundex to fill
it. Ok when small amounts of data

I'm just doing some experimenting with search options when a user types
something into a text box. If we were looking at stock items say I
would want to search for items that matched the stock code (or part code
input) or if they input several words match these to the stock
description.

Pulling out the data is no problem but just want to see what other
people do to present it to the user. E.g.

- After they enter data and press enter - show a dialog box that
displays the matches with OK/Cancel buttons
- Have a search form that has a search field with a list of results
below and optionally update with each keystroke.
- After they enter data and press enter - show a popup just below with
the first few matches that scrolls (a bit like intellisense)
- Other ideas?

What do you use and why?
