Virgil:  Many companies provide this information and more for trucking;
Cadec, PeopleNet, Zata, @Road, Qualcomm to name a few. They offer a full
solution and have doing it for many years. There are some services I have
heard of that do exactly what you are suggesting at a significantly less
cost than the above companies.

As for non commercial applications, do a search on APRS!

I have done mapping with a VFP database automating Microsoft Maps. This
would probably work in your scenario below.

It's fun stuff.

Subject: Maps and Trucking

A person could have a gps transmitter on a truck that sends an update every
2 hours with the date, time, truck number, longitude and latitude.
A receiver could be at the office to receive that data stream and feed this
information into a FoxPro Database.

All the while You could have a large screen tv with this map on it that
automatically refreshes every 15 minutes and queries the up to date data.

By doing this, you would always know the location of your trucks and be able
to keep an eye on them.

Anybody have anything like this ??

A sample of the map I'm referring to is on my web site under the link "USS W
S Sims FF-1059"
