I'm with Tracy. The user must be moving the mouse slightly when clicking and 
getting a click n' drag. Unless you have special user hostile interface ((c)

Not in Vista. 
If you click and drag slightly when clicking into the date field, do you get a 
different behavior?
Is the date field she is clicking into already the active control?
