I went through all of this, too. Frankly, it felt "cutting edge" and
cool to have my own web server, including mail server etc. I learned
one *hell* of a lot about all of it, both good and bad. However, when
that machine died, and I thought back about all of the hardest-learned
lessons, especially security-related, I decided that I didn't have
time, energy, or the desire to do it again and keep ahead of the bad
guys.

So -- I went back to a hosting service. Very glad for it.
