If I put a $1200 check into my bank, $100 is available the next day, the 
balance is available in 2 days if the bank is within my region, and longer if 
it's outside my region.   If I pay my $1200 mortgage, it gets sucked out of my 
bank in record time.

EXACTLY.  These f*ckers are milking some loophole and profiting from it. 
  If payments are not officially credited by the due date--even though 
they've been accessible since before then--the poor schmuck customer not 
only gets a late fee but ALSO has his interest rates jacked up and his 
credit takes a beating (over time).

Just remember come election time---they politicians voted to bail them 
out because "they were too big to fail."
