        I'm still not seeing the difference. 

        With a desktop app that uses an internet-based data server, if the data 
"suddenly disappears", the app will not work. With a desktop app that calls a 
web service to get the data, if the web service "suddenly disappears", the app 
will not work.

        It seems to me that both have the same potential weak link: an internet 
connection. In the case of a failure of that connection, the app will be dead 
in the water.
