As I understand it, themes are optional because the rendering of them could cause throughput problems on marginally-provisioned computers. If a user decides to turn off theme support, that decision should be respected. While I am completely in favor of good design and attractive interfaces, I would not stray too far from native support because it would undermine the user's decision and/or cause problems in the future.
