I avoided fields over 10 chars simply because I was used to it. There are some advantages that I think are worth having:
1. Field descriptions - These are very useful when presenting users with information. "xs_cdd" might not mean anything to them but "Customer due date" will. I use this when reporting on fields that have changed. You can show the field (User description) then old and new values. All done using a database function with no extra code. 2. Database functions that can iterate through your tables and do something - like say a backup. If you add a table the code stays the same.
