Sure they can.  The WRT54 is ancient.  I've got a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND
which runs OpenWRT great.
I'm running FTP, HTTP, UPnP media server, Samba etc.

It has a USB port so I have a 1TB drive plugged in.

I get 300Mb/s over wireless.
